Usually, we talk about free speech as an abstract concept.  But as Michelle Obama said during a White House poetry jam on May 12, “Democracy … has room for lots of voices.”

Some of those voices are speaking out through poetry at events such as the poetry slam featured in the video below.  Busboys & Poets, a Washington DC cafe owned by Iraqi immigrant Andy Shallal, is just one of many public spaces where Americans gather to make their voices heard on the issues that matter to them — using the language of art.  Check it out:
